Walking on a beach, I am inclined to pocket more worn, weathered shell fragments than shiny, perfectly formed specimens. I am similarly drawn to sculpture in any medium that reveals and celebrates hand craftsmanship and the usually laborious process by which it is made. These shells mark the beginning of my love affair with lead crystal, mainly because a soft light develops in the finishing process that practically illuminates a sculpture. I hope to one day create many more versions of these softly colored spirals.
“Aqua Shell” contains a mesmerizing blend of six different colors of crystal that were drip cast into the plaster mold, then finished by sandblasting with fine abrasive to further distress the surface and edges. Tiny air bubbles, (common in cast glass) capture light at the core of the spiral and bounce it around as the shell softly unfurls. 6” x 10” x 7”
